Tell us about George Rydell Construction
George Rydell Constructions is a commercial construction company who have been operating for over 30 years. We successfully deliver projects for many organisations including Woolworths, ALDI, Fonterra, Murray Goulburn, Ballantyne, Mondelez and Middy’s. We work in a variety of sectors such as retail; education, food and beverage and pharmaceutical.
Originally based in Melbourne we have this year also opened a regional office in Ballarat.
I have been working for the company for just over 13 years as a contract administrator.
Who’s in the team?
We have approximately 40 full time employees including construction managers, project managers, site managers, contract administrators, OH&S representatives, accounts and office staff.
Here in Ballarat there are two of us. Wendy and I work from Platypus Coworking. Rather than open a standalone office, the business saw coworking as a great alternative. It provides security and a social environment without the costs and isolation.
What have been your greatest achievements in the past twelve months?
Opening a regional office in Ballarat has been a great achievement. As many of George Rydell Constructions’ (GRC) projects are regional, the management team decided in late 2018 to open a regional office in Ballarat at Platypus Coworking to better service these jobs. I currently work between this office, the Melbourne office and my sites.
A personal success has been administering eight different projects over the past 12 months, ranging from ALDI refurbishments to large scale dairy projects. Stage Two of a cheese production facility for Fonterra in Stanhope, Victoria (circa $25 million build) was a highlight. Stage 1 (Circa $30 million build) was completed in May 2017.
GRC were engaged for the design and construction and worked with Fonterra to meet the projects tight timeframe and complex requirements. I was the contract administrator for both
stages of the project – preparing, examining and negotiating the contracts for all subcontractors and managing the claims and invoicing with the client.
What’s Next for Your Business/Organisation?
Our plan for 2020 is to continue fostering positive relationships with existing clients and subcontractors and to build new ones. We have some exciting new projects to commence and existing ones that will run into the new year. We are implementing new software to better manage the OH&S and quality on our sites, streamlining the process and going paperless.
What do you enjoy when you’re not at work?
When I’m not working I like to sew, read and spend time with my two children (Monty 7 and Winnie 4) and husband Darren. We’ve recently returned from a trip to Europe to visit my husband’s family and take the kids back to see where he grew up.
